Our commitment to biodiversity & sustainability is key to our farming ethos.
We have increased our biodiversity through our commitment to the Mid-Tier Stewardship Scheme which has included activity such as:
- Orchard planting
- Bee Garden
- Wilding Projects
- Hedgerow planting and management (hedge laying) to improve structure and longevity
- Implementing field margins to reduce risk of potential pollutants to watercourses: 4-6m buffer strip on cultivated land, 12-24m watercourse buffer strips
- Providing food resources for birds and insects: Autumn sown BumbleBird mixes in fields, overwintering stubble
- Providing habitat and foraging sites for birds and invertebrates: Flower rich margins and plots
- Permanent grassland with very low inputs
- Wildlife Pond on our nature trail walk
Sustainability
Sustainability at Churchfields Farm
At Churchfields, sustainability isn’t just a buzzword—it’s at the heart of everything we do. From the fields to the café, we’re committed to working with nature, not against it, ensuring our farm and hospitality operations are as eco-friendly as possible.
Waste Less, Do More
We’re always looking for better ways to reduce waste and lessen our impact on the environment:
Food waste is responsibly recycled in compostable bags, helping us return nutrients back to the soil.
We practice split waste recycling to ensure materials are separated and processed efficiently.
We’ve significantly reduced single-use plastics, only using them where absolutely essential.
All takeaway cups and lids are now fully compostable, and we’ve switched to paper bags instead of plastic.
Our cold drinks range has moved entirely to cans, eliminating single-use plastic bottles.
Renewable Energy for the Farm
We’re proud to power the farm using a biomass boiler, which provides heat and hot water across our entire site. This renewable energy source helps us reduce reliance on fossil fuels while making use of organic waste.
Homegrown & Locally Sourced
You’ll taste the difference in our café and farm shop:
We serve fresh fruit straight from our orchard—harvested with care and picked at peak ripeness.
All beef served at Churchfields is home-reared. Our cattle are grazed rotationally, matured slowly over five years, and butchered locally to reduce food miles and support the regional economy.
We proudly partner with local producers whenever possible, helping to support nearby businesses and keep our carbon footprint low.
Protecting Wildlife & Nature
Our natural environment matters:
We actively manage our woodland and nature trails to benefit not only our visitors, but also native wildlife, including birds, bees, and other pollinators.
Our grazing rotation practices protect the land and promote healthier soil and biodiversity.
💚 Why It Matters
Everything we do—whether it’s crafting a delicious meal in the café, welcoming you on a farm walk, or rearing our cattle—has sustainability in mind. We believe in farming for the future, creating food and experiences that are good for the planet and great for our community.
We have invested heavily in sustainable energy sources over the past few years. Between the power needed for our cafés, holiday cottages, houses, salt production and our very large ice cream freezers—Churchfields requires a lot of energy!
